TransCanada Corporation (TransCanada) proposed the design and construction of the new Northern Courier Pipeline Project (NCP). The NCP included seven large watercourse crossings, each over 700 m in length. The largest crossing identified was the Athabasca River, located north of Fort Mackay, Alberta.

In 2016 TransCanada Corporation, CCI Inc., and Michels Canada were awarded Project of the year for the Northern Courier Pipeline Project.
